I scaled each summit of desire, each crest of yearning’s height,
Found only hollow echoes there, an empty, vacant sight.
Yet in that very emptiness no void would dare appear;
Only you stood before my eyes, my vision’s sole delight.
I watched the crowd pour life on emeralds, diamonds rare,
But only for you, my final breath embraced the night.
O homeland, starlit sky and fragrance of the earth,
It is through you our very flesh has gathered sacred might.
Through every vein my blood runs fast, your name in every vein;
To spend my life for you alone, this conscience burns so bright.
Beloved heart, today the pen has steeped itself in tea;
To drink, to live for all mankind, that is the lasting right.

वह ख़ाली-ख़ाली भी नज़र नहीं आ रहे,
तुम ही तुम नज़रों के आगे हुए हाज़िर देखा !
हीरे-पन्नों पर लोग जान छिड़कता देखा है,
पर तुम्हीं पे मरता अपना दम आख़िर देखा !
आसमाँ के चमकते तारे, मिट्टी की ख़ुश्बू तुम,
ऐ वतन, बना तुमसे हमारा शरीर देखा !
लहू की एक-एक बूंद रग-रग दौड़े तेरे नाम,
तुझ पर लुटा दूँ जान, सच्चा ज़मीर देखा !
जाने-जिगर, चाय पर आज हुए हैं कलम,

वाङ्ग्मयिक भाव-विस्तार
यह ग़ज़ल आंतरिक और बाह्य, दोनों प्रकार की ऊँचाइयों का अन्वेषण करती है। कवि ने मानवीय आकांक्षाओं की शिखरों को छूकर देखा है, किन्तु उन ऊँचाइयों के बीच एक “ख़ालीपन” का नज़ारा पाया। यह ख़ालीपन भौतिक वैभव,हीरे और पन्नों,से भरने योग्य नहीं।
कवि का सच्चा संबल है “वतन” की मिट्टी और उसकी सुगंध। यहाँ “वतन” केवल भौगोलिक राष्ट्र नहीं, बल्कि आध्यात्मिक मातृभूमि और सार्वभौम मानवता का प्रतीक है। लहू की हर बूंद में इस वतन का नाम दौड़ता है,यह शाश्वत निष्ठा और आत्मसमर्पण का संकेत है।
अंतिम शेर में “चाय पर कलम” का रूपक इस बात का प्रतीक है कि संवाद और साहित्य,बौद्धिक सृजन, ही वास्तविक जागीर है, जिसे सब साझा कर सकते हैं। यह ग़ज़ल भौतिक सम्पन्नता से आगे बढ़कर आध्यात्मिक और मानवीय मूल्यों की ओर संकेत करती है।
