NOTHING IS NOT TRUE : NO\KNOW THYSELF NOT
MAKE EARTH GREAT FOREVER
LET'S GOODNESS A CHANCE : END ALL WARS
English Verse:
Those who once mattered most in life,
For who all desires and meaning seemed rife;
Their presence stirred a sweeteness sharp,
A pang from depths where sorrows harp.
A thorn struck deep, a blow unseen,
A saga bruised where love had been;
Even betrayal, done by beloved's hand,
Grew pale before such wounds unplanned.
A tale oft-told, each dawn anew,
A naivete that never knew;
The love we bore was fril, misled,
A scheme that bloomed, then softly bled.
You left, I stayed, the story split,
Its fragile strands by time unknit;
A tender folly, debt of the heart,
Grew heavier as we drifted apart.
From me to me, war, peace, deceit,
This grief and grudge in summer's heat;
And witers chilled the blame we hurled,
A season turned, a changing world.
Yet even now, I steep the tea,
And drink with all sincerity;
For those who breathe with soul and nerve,
To love and serve, is sacred verve.

An Expert Critique: A Thorn Struck Deep Sweet
The Title and Structure:
This poem titled A Thorn Struck Deep Sweet functions as a lament, a form of lyrical poetry that processes personal loss, disillusionment, and emotional evolution. Composed in rhymed couplets with a musical, ghazal-format cadence, each stanza or sher (verse) functions as a complete emotional capsule, echoing classical Urdu poetic traditions while infusing them with modern sensitivity.
Theme and Emotional Landscape: At its heart, the peom reflects the complex interplay of love, betrayal, longing, and personal reckoning. The speaker’s voice is burdened not just by romantic disappointment, but by existential realization!
- The first stanza introduces love once deemed central to existence, only to reveal that such love, though sweet, carried a string of pain.
- The sencond stanza presents a metaphor of a ‘thorned slap’, a powerful oxymoron denoting emotional abuse masked as intimacy. Betrayal is not only committed, but magnified by the beloved’s once-sacred position.
- The third stanza turns introspective, blaming innocence and illusion. Love is seen retrospectively as a conspiracy of innocence, a deception born of immaturity rather than malice.
- The fourth sanza is perhaps the most dramatic one in which the poet acknowledges separation, not just of persons, but of narratives and realities. Love has incurred a debt, of emotions unreciprocated, and wounds unresolved.
- The fifth stanza expands the scope from romantic loss to internal turmoil. The speaker speaks of becoming his own battleground, friend and foe, warmth and frost. It is a portrayal of psychological duality under emotional strain.
- The final stanza offers subtle clousure. Despite the loss, the ritual of tea, a symbol of calm and contemplation, continues. This reflects the resilience of spirit. Life, and its traditions, persist. Love remains a duty, a sacred calling, despite heartbreak.
Language and Poetic Devices
- Imagery: The use of ‘thorn’, ‘chest’, ‘changing seasons’, and ‘tea’, form vivid metaphors for emoional scars, fleeting illusions, time’s passage, and healing.
- Oxymorons and Juxtapositions: Phrases like ‘sweet stab’, ‘bitter loyalty’, ‘changing warm weather turned cold’, reflect the emotional paradoxes inherent in deep human bonds.
- Repetition and Rhythm: Repetitive strutures like ‘हम रहगएं’, ‘ हमसे हमारी’, create both emphasis and emotional echo, inviting the reader to feel the circularity of pain.
- Symbolism:
- >Tea: A grounding force, symbolic of intimacy, memory, and eduring selfhood.
- >Changing seasons: Metaphor for emotional transformation.
- >Debt and Fard(Duty): A spiritual and moral undertone, adding a Sufi-like Gravitas.
Pholosophical and Universal Relevance
While deeply personal, the poem mirrors universal human experiences, the evolution from attachment to disillusionment, from pain to resilience. It resonates with global themes:
- The fragility of emotional dependence
- The disorientation post-betrayal
- The dual nature of memory as both healer and tormentor
- The continuity of life despite emotional rupture
The FinE tunE
This poem can be read as both an emotional autobiography and a cultural artifact. Rooted in South Asian poetic tradition, it transcends linguistic barriers through its philosophical depth and lyrical sincerity.
It is ideal for inclusion in academic discussions on comparative literature, especially in exploring South Asian love poetry, ghazal aesthetics, and the psychological dimensions of post-romantic identity.
